See the lakes
The Lake District has more than sixteen lakes and numerous tarns plus a stretch of coastline. The Gateway is the perfect lake district hotel to start your adventures from. We are 10 minutes from Lake Windermere the Lake District's most famous lake and only 15minutes from the seaside coast.
Get on the water
In the Lake District there is no shortage of water activities. From kayaking to windsurfing, paddle boarding or diving. You can enjoy a lake cruise on Lake Windermere with a glass of wine, hire your own boat or get in the water for some wild open water swimming. Lessons in water-skiing or sailing, boat racing or raft building also available.

Eat and drink
South Lakes has a fantastic range of culinary delights and great cuisine to enjoy. We have a reputation for unique and distinctive food and drinks locally. Enjoy our Gateway à la carte cuisine or menu du jour from the convenience of the hotel. You can also explore our famous local produce including Kendal Mint Cake, Grasmere Gingerbread, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Cumberland sausage, Hawkshead Relish and Farrer’s tea and coffee. We are situatued directly opposite Plumgarths farm shop which offers some of the best local produce from our market town and surrounding areas.
Events and festivals
Being perfectly located next to Kendal and Windermere there is no shortage of things going on. Kendal is a famous festival town hosting a great calendar of events including the Kendal Torchlight Carnical, the International comic arts festival, Mountain festival, Kendal calling music festival to name just a few. Experience the thrill of free falling from up to 15,000 ft in an experience you will never forget. From The Gateway you are within easy reach of Sky Dive Northwest. Suitable for first time skydivers or more experienced pros and with only a few minutes training you can safely undertake a tandem jump with one of the instructors. This is one of our highest rated local activities and a real adrenaline rush like no other.
Historic places to see
The Gateway is only 10 minutes from Kendal castle, Levens hall, Abbot Hall and Sizergh castle. During your stay you will be perfectly positioned to indulge in the fascinating history of one of England's most historic market towns. You will also be in easy reach of Holker Hall, Wray Castle and other heritage assets. Soak up the culture and history by discovering the fascinating stories of the area's past.
Museums and attractions
There are so many attractions to keep you busy it's difficult to know where to start. Whether its the Lakes aquarium, Lakes motor museum, world and home of Beatrix Potter, . You can also take a steam train ride along lakeside from the Haverthwaite railway. Kendal and the Lakeland museums are within 10 minutes and are filled with many treasures and delights.
Theatre and cinema
We are lucky to be surrounded by a rich offering of arts, theatre and cinema. The brewery arts centre hosts a great calendar of music, theatre, comedy and arts as well as the heron theatre, the old laundry theatre which are both nearby.
Whether you are looking to do something different or celebrate a special occasion where better to try a hot air balloon ride than over the stunning lake district countryside. Only 15 minutes from The Gateway you can be soaring up into the clouds to get breath taking views of the lakes and mountains.
The Gateway is a great hotel to base your golfing break from. We are situated between Windermere golf club, Kendal golf club and Carus Green golf and leisure club. All three are very well maintained sites with great facilities to enjoy.
The Gateway sits next to two fantastic equestrian centres where you can trek the lakes on horseback. Hacks, treks and lessons for all abilities are available. The fantastic teams at Lakeland Pony Trek and Witherslack Riding Centre will ensure you are well looked after whether you are a complete beginner or advanced rider.
Lakeland wildlife oasis
What a fantastic day out the Lakeland wildlife oasis is. No matter what age you are you will certainly enjoy seeing this unique and exciting blend of wildlife and animals. With over 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates there is plenty to see. You can even book animal experiences where you can get up close and personal with the snow leapards, monkeys, lemurs and meerkats.
Ready to climb?
Whether you are a complete novice or seasoned expert there are great climbing opportunities on our doorstep. We are 5 minutes from Kendal Climbing Wall which has the tallest indoor climbing wall in England and for those more experienced climbers there are great outdoor climbs at Chapel Head Scar and the many crags or quarries.
